The Power to Change (YWP Session, June 2010)

The first session of the Young Women’s Parliament took place in Bat Yam in June 2010. In the first part of the event Orly Vilna’y (journalist) presented her view and experience with regard to working for social change. Some 200 girls gathered in the hall of Eshkol Pais in Bat Yam.

Orly showed her documentary film “deep in the ground” (which was screened in “Uvda”, Ilana Dayan’s program on channel 2) and described the humiliating attitude of the policemen to the sexually enslaved women when they discovered them in the hidden holes. Changing the attitudes and the practices of the police with regard to the women cannot be changed only by the media’s work. Orly explained that commited individuals can bring about a social change if they are well informed and are ready to take on themselves an uncompromising struggle.

Following Orly Vilna’y’s lecture the girls splitted into groups and continued to discuss the subject. They talked about the discrimination of girls who are involved in Sports, in their schools, the limited opportunities that are open for girls in the youth labor market (in school vacations) and the gaps in the wages that are paid.
